Theatre SKAM seeks to employ up to 12 post secondary students. Theatre SKAM is Victoria BC company, who have produced theatre in Victoria, nationally and internationally for 23 years.
Positions are supported by the Canada Summer Jobs Grant and the BC Arts Council Coop Program and all positions are pending funding.
Positions run from 9 to 16 weeks and start and end dates range from April 16th to September 2nd, depending on the position and the funding. (It is not likely the position will run entirely during this period.)
We aim to provide an early career professional experience and a strong reference in the future. SKAM Summer students have gone on to jobs in the field in Victoria and larger centres.
To be eligible, all applicants must be students who meet these criteria:
be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment
have been registered as full-time students in the previous academic year (critical) and intend to return to school on a full-time basis in the next academic year (intent is the requirement- if you are graduating let’s chat)
be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment
have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations
We are currently accepting resumes for all positions listed below as we wait for funding to be confirmed by April 16. All positions will have mentorship with professional staff to ensure quality of work, timely deadlines and overall confidence for the student, in that position.
2 x Co-Producers/ Production Interns of our Annual Theatre Festival : SKAMpede
*Producers are the heart of any production. This is an great opportunity to get some serious producing skills. Some of the Co-Producers shared duties are: Artist Liaison; creating artist packages; getting licenses; coordinating set up of weekend festival; coordinating tours along the Galloping Goose Trail; follow the Critical Path of previous co-producers; trail and venue planning, work with Graphic Designer; help plan fundraiser; rehearsal organization; some driving if applicable; coordinate media calls…etc etc. If you love to be organized, and aren’t intimidated by professional artists or audiences, and are quick on your feet at problem solving, this may be the job for you!
4 X Emerging Artists
*Theatre SKAM runs a Pop-Up Theatre (a 10-seat venue on the back of a pick up truck) appearing in various locations around Victoria. We are looking for actors who can rehearse and act in short, all-ages 10-minute shows in front of an audience no greater than 10. We hope to have the Pop-Up running all summer at all times. Must be able to busk and rally audience into the Pop-UP! Creating and writing scripts could also serve you well in this position! At least one of these positions needs a driver’s license and comfort behind the wheel of a large pickup with a big wooden box on the back.
1 x Marketing and Development Assistant
*Website Management, social media communications, creating opportunities to promote SKAM productions, SKAMpede, the Pop-Up Theatre and Concord Floral. Some duties include: creating press releases, liaising with press/media contacts, creating audience surveys…generally furthering the promotion of all things SKAM. Want to learn about promotions and creating a buzz, this may be the job for you!
2 x Assistant Stage Managers for SKAM’s Summer production of Concord Floral
*Liaise with Stage Manager; scheduling and running secondary rehearsals; liaise with costume, set, lighting and sound designers; calling cues; running lines, ensuring all props and costumes are set and ready for rehearsals and shows. If you love being organized, on time, and most importantly, have an integral role in the theatre without being onstage, this may just be the job for you!
1 x Assistant Costume Designer/Wardrobe Supervisor for SKAM’s Summer production of Concord Floral
*If you have a dream to design costumes for theatre, this could help kickstart your professional career. We need an assistant designer for our modern-day show, Concord Floral, starring 20 teenagers. Duties include: measuring actors; assisting the designer in creating a “look” for the show that is cohesive; maintain budget; shop and build costumes and accessories; liaise with stage management and director and production designer; and once the show is open: maintaining costumes for wear and tear, laundry, setting up costumes in dressing rooms, etc. A great opportunity for a budding designer.
1x Drama School Administrator Assistant
* Successful applicant will be shadowing current school administrator in learning website SKAM uses for registrations and promotions; liaison with our Communications Coordinator; front-line discussion with interested families; communicating with funding agencies, supporting staff and students for final performances; updating teachers with information, maintaining the studio schedule. If you have an interest in learning about office management in relation to a theatre school, this would be a great job for you!
1 x Supervisor of Front of House/Box Office
*Coordinates, oversees and ensures smooth operations of our Front of House and Box Office for SKAMpede, Concord Floral and SKAM’s Pop-Up Theatre. Some duties include: ticket sales reconciliation, preparing reports daily; balancing box office deposit forms; train, manage and coordinate volunteers; ensuring safety of actors and audience members; researching new locations and scripts for Pop-Up etc etc. If you like getting around town, and number crunching, and working with audiences, staff and artists, this may be the summer job for you!
