Runaway

a new play
by Mika Laulainen

16 year old Sam has invited you to an anti-car rally featuring world renowned activist David Suzuki. Dr Suzuki is late, and things are not quite as Sam advertised. Sam’s story takes us on a journey from environmental activism, via waiting rooms and play time, to a place of real heart. A bittersweet slice of life with a dash of humour and a pinch of song. This is a show about sisters, friendship, loss… and aliens.

An evolution of a 2012 Bike Ride mini-play, workshopped to full length in 2014, “Runaway” is a World Premiere for Vancouver playwright Mika Laulainen.

Performed by Jess Amy Shead, Randi Edmundson, and Kieran Wilson. Directed by Graham McDonald. Features original set and costumes by Halley Fulford and Freyja Zazu under the mentorship of Catherine Hahn.

Reviews of previous versions:

“Suffice to say this cast of two[…] takes the audience on such a soulful journey that it moved a three-year-old in the audience to get up and give Laulainen a spontaneous hug. (Any actor who can make a kid that can barely talk feel their pain gets a big thumbs-up in my book.) With this charming piece, Laulainen just earned “actor to watch” status in my reviewer’s notebook.”

“Mika Laulainen’s two-person play near the creek held the audience captive as the plot transformed from an environmental rally to an emotional coming-of-age tale.”
