You know SKAM- we seldom do things half way. We work hard to make the best shows and events we can. Now we’re about to take our fundraising to the next level too with our 18 to 1 Campaign.

From the opening night of Hello Baby! on February 22, 2013 until the opening night of Fashion Machine on April 28, 2013, donations made by individuals to Theatre SKAM will be matched at a rate of 18 to 1.

Yes, that means what you think it means.

If you donate a dollar, SKAM Board Member Robert Milne will donate eighteen dollars. You donate 25, he donates 450. You just turned your 25 dollars into a 475 dollar donation to SKAM. Keep going. You can do math. Extraordinary n’est pas?

The catch? There is a limit to Bob’s ridiculous generosity. That limit is the first $1000 we raise.

The goal of the 18 to 1 Campaign is to raise $25,000. The campaign funds will be used to purchase a one-ton flatbed truck and convert that into a charming and classic mobile performance vehicle. We’re aiming for a sparkling hardwood stage, a simple sound system, and a small lighting rig. We’ll buy some chairs and tables and pop-up tents. Everything the company needs for our site-specific and mobile work. And we’ll share it.

When we’re not using the SKAM Mobile Performance Vehicle, we’ll offer it for rentals. Farmer’s markets, music festivals, other live performances- the SKAM MPV will be seen around town.

This is not something we’re doing on a whim. We took a look at the company and the plans for the next several years and we see this makes sense.

Were looking to our audience to support this big leap forward. And yes, we know we could have done this other ways like, say, asked you for six thousand dollars and said Bob will match that 3 to 1. (Think of it like that if you wish.)

We chose 18 to 1 because we wanted you to know we’re serious about this. Bob is serious about this. This is happening. This is not a halfway thing. The difference between you coming up with one thousand and six thousand dollars (or more) is a newer truck, which means an MPV with a longer life.

So, what do you say? Wanna make great theatre?

Are you in?

Donate securely online by visiting the home page and clicking the Donate Now button or click here. Both take you to Canada Helps, a nationally recognized and highly secure platform for contributing to charities in Canada.

Or send a cheque to Theatre SKAM 18 to 1, Box 8563, Victoria BC, V8W 3S2.

This live performance event features original 10-minute performances by artists stationed (outside) along the Galloping Goose Regional Trail. Performances are repeated over the course of five hours as audiences ride their bikes, in groups of 12, from show to show.

Saturday January 12, 2013 at 8pm
With Mike Demers & Waves of Daves
Oddfellows Hall, 1315 Douglas Street
Tickets: $18 / $68 (includes ticket for Canadian Theatre’s best door prize- the SKAMraffle)

Each year, SKAMMers and the city’s arts community come together to mark their birthday with a little fun and a little fundraising.

The Almost Legal Birthday Bash let’s everyone flex their rebellious muscles, and even put an I ♥ SKAM tattoo on them! See if your new SKAM artist ID cards can get past our bouncers. You think that’s tough, try out the Arts Funding Hustle Shuffle board. Show off your Runway Project designer skills at the Fashion Machine competition and go home with a prize. We’re bringing back some successful tricks from last year too – like the 3-ball pool game – so haul out your loonie jar and get your game on.

Where is this awesome party? For those that haven’t been, the Oddfellows Hall is one of the funkiest historic spaces in the city that includes a pool hall, games room and a huge dance hall (to go with the awesome band).

SKAM’s 18th Birthday Bash will again feature the one-of-a-kind winner-takes-all door prize: the legendary SKAMraffle! No silent auctions, no drunken bidding fests, just one OMG(!) extravaganza fun-package for the lucky ticket holder who gets to go home with an arts, entertainment and local business prize pack that remains unrivalled in Canadian Theatre. It will keep you busy all year, so it’s worth the extra 50 bucks to take home this grab bag.

Tickets available at the SKAM hotline: 250.FUN.SKAM(250.386.7526)

See you at the Bash!

Hello everyone,

Allow me to introduce myself as the new Theatre SKAM Administrative Assistant! I am well into my third week here in the SKAM office and am settling in nicely. I’ve cleaned off a desk (Max, where are you going to go?) and am now making a dent into the SKAM subscriber database. We have something very special to send out to all of you, but I’m finding the database a little out of date. Please send me an updated mailing address to erin@skam.ca so I can get down to the business of licking envelopes and stamps.

A little bit about me before I go.

I am nearly brand new to Victoria. I moved out here in May from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan to be with my partner (who is an Island boy born and raised).

In Saskatoon I was primarily a Stage Manager, stage managing for many local companies as part of several Live Five Seasons, as well as working with Persephone Theatre, The Saskatchewan Native Theatre Company, The Rosthern Station Arts Centre and Wide Open Theatre. The last few years I have found myself on tour most of the year seeing every high school and elementary school gym in Sakatchewan as far north as La Loche, down south to Weyburn, as far east as Creighton, and even out to Calgary and Edmonton, AB. In the summer’s I would call Jan Lake, SK home and take a break from touring to work in a fishing lodge all summer. I am a prairie girl at heart and will always love enourmous skies and amazing lightning storms and even *gasp* snow.

But in a very short time I have fallen in love with Victoria and all of its opportunities. I was enamoured with Theatre SKAM from the moment I got here and am thrilled at the opportunity to be part of this company. I believe that SKAM will give me the oppurtunity to connect with this amazing community in ways that other organizations may not have. Every day I wonder at the beauty of Victoria and am charmed by all of the people I meet. Arts administration will offer up some new challenges for me but I am looking forward to learning and growing with this extraordinary company.

I may always be a Roughrider fan, but I am looking forward to making Victoria my home.

Can’t wait to meet each and every one of you.
